  5.     What seemed like ordinary bags of heroin hit the bazaars of
  6. the South Bronx early this month. Dubbed "Tango & Cash," the
  7. product sold for $10 a bag. By the end of last week, the drug
  8. had killed six people in New York, seven in New Jersey and two
  9. in Connecticut; 213 overdosed addicts wound up in emergency
  10. rooms. Preliminary tests indicate that the drug is fentanyl,
  11. a tranquilizer described as "150 to 6,000 times more potent
  12. than morphine."

  14.     Police took extraordinary steps to warn addicts, cruising
  15. blighted neighborhoods in squad cars. "If you have used this
  16. drug," they announced over their loudspeakers, "seek medical
  17. attention immediately!" Ironically, these efforts may have led
  18. addicts to crave it all the more. "Hard-core users ask how they
  19. could get hold of it. They figure those who died made a
  20. mistake," says Christopher Policano, a spokesman at Phoenix
  21. House, a drug rehabilitation center.
